Where our team works: Republic Tax Relief does not have an Alabama office, and we will not pretend to. Our licensed staff works from Southern California offices in Corona and Laguna Hills. IRS representation is federal, and the IRS and ALDOR handle most cases by mail, phone and fax, so you get full representation without driving to an office.
Common IRS Problems Alabama Taxpayers Face
Most Alabama calls we take start the same way. Someone fell behind during a hard year, the notices got scarier, and now they do not know which letter matters most.
- Unfiled returns. Missing years let the IRS file a substitute return for you, usually with no deductions. See our unfiled tax returns services.
- A balance you cannot pay. Interest and penalties keep growing until a plan is in place. Learn about back tax help.
- A federal tax lien. A recorded lien can block a home sale, a refinance or a business loan. Read about tax lien help.
- A bank levy or wage garnishment. Either one can drain an account or shrink a paycheck with little warning. Get bank levy help or wage garnishment relief.
- Unpaid payroll taxes. The IRS can hold owners and managers personally responsible. See payroll tax debt relief.
- Penalties bigger than the tax. Some can be removed with IRS penalty abatement.
Call now if you received any of these
- CP504: The IRS intends to levy certain assets, including some state tax refunds
- LT11 or Letter 1058: Final notice of intent to levy, which usually gives you 30 days to request a hearing
- Letter 3172: A Notice of Federal Tax Lien has been filed
- A visit from a revenue officer at your home or business
- A final notice from ALDOR warning of state garnishment, levy or lien
Not sure what a letter means? Our guide to common IRS notices breaks them down, and our IRS collections defense page explains each stage.
Alabama State Tax Debt Plays by Different Rules
Many Alabama residents owe two agencies at once. The IRS and the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) collect separately, and settling with one does nothing to stop the other.
Alabama also has a few rules that catch people off guard:
- No state settlement on tax you legally owe. ALDOR’s own taxpayer advocacy office notes that the state does not accept offers in compromise when taxes are legally due. That makes the right federal plan even more important.
- State payment agreements are discretionary. Alabama law lets ALDOR approve a payment agreement when it helps collect the debt, and sending a financial statement and a payment does not guarantee approval.
- Federal changes ripple into your state return. Alabama is one of the few states that lets you deduct federal income tax paid. When the IRS changes your federal balance, your Alabama numbers can change too.
- Local sales tax is layered. Many Alabama cities and counties collect their own sales tax. Business owners can owe the state and several local governments at the same time.
Because the state will not settle for less, we build your federal and state plans together. The goal is a monthly budget you can live with, not two agreements fighting over the same paycheck. Learn more about our business tax resolution services.
Tax Relief Options for Alabama: IRS vs. ALDOR
Most relief tools exist on the federal side, but Alabama’s options are narrower. Here is how they compare.
| Option | With the IRS | With ALDOR |
|---|---|---|
| Settle for less | Offer in compromise based on ability to pay | Not available when the tax is legally due |
| Monthly payments | Short-term and long-term installment agreements | Written payment agreements, often with a Collection Information Statement |
| Hardship pause | Currently Not Collectible status | Reviewed case by case with documentation |
| Penalty relief | First-time abatement or reasonable cause | Reasonable cause requests |
| Advocate office | Taxpayer Advocate Service | Office of Taxpayer Advocacy, after normal appeal steps run out |

Serving Alabama From the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf Coast
Tax problems in the Rocket City look different from those on the Eastern Shore. Here is what we see in each part of the state.
Huntsville and North Alabama
Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Athens, Florence, Muscle Shoals, Scottsboro
Aerospace, defense and engineering work tied to Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Many clients are contractors or consultants who took on 1099 income without setting enough aside.
For clearance holders, unfiled returns and unpaid federal taxes are financial concerns that can surface in a background investigation, so getting into a formal plan early matters.
Mobile and the Gulf Coast
Mobile, Saraland, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach
The port, shipyards and aircraft assembly bring steady jobs, while Baldwin County’s beach towns run on seasonal tourism. Restaurant owners, tipped workers and vacation rental hosts often face uneven income and payroll gaps.
After hurricanes, the IRS often postpones deadlines for declared disaster areas, but a postponement is not forgiveness. Retirees who moved down from Chicago or the Midwest sometimes bring an old IRS balance with them, too.
Birmingham and Central Alabama
Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Trussville, Pelham, Tuscaloosa
Hospitals, banks and professional firms mean many clients are physicians, attorneys and practice owners. High income does not prevent tax debt. It often means bigger balances and a lien that threatens a home or practice loan.
Montgomery, Auburn and the Wiregrass
Montgomery, Prattville, Auburn, Opelika, Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark
State employees, military families near Maxwell Air Force Base and Fort Novosel, farm operations and family-owned shops. Moves on military orders and seasonal farm income often lead to missed filings.
Wherever you live in Alabama, the work happens the same way: by phone, video and secure upload, with no office visit required.
How Our Alabama Tax Resolution Service Works
We use a results-focused approach. That means we find the option you actually qualify for, then put it in place, instead of selling a program before we see your file.

Send it once, safely. Your tax returns, Social Security number and bank statements travel through bank-grade 256-bit encryption and stay protected under federal data security standards from upload to resolution.
Expert Insight: The Hidden Risks of Handling IRS Problems Alone or With AI
Plenty of people try to call the IRS themselves or ask a chatbot what to do. Here is what our team sees go wrong in Alabama cases.
AI may suggest a state deal that does not exist
Chatbots often assume every state settles like the IRS. Alabama does not accept offers on tax legally due, so a plan built on that advice can waste months while the state keeps collecting.
Your financial statement becomes your ceiling
IRS and ALDOR financial forms set what each agency thinks you can pay. Overstate income and you lock into a payment you cannot keep. Leave something out and you invite closer scrutiny.
Fixing the IRS while forgetting Alabama
People celebrate a federal agreement, then get a state garnishment. Two plans set up separately can also eat the same paycheck twice and both default.
Deadlines nobody mentions
Missing the 30-day window after a final levy notice can cost you a formal appeal. An AI tool cannot see your transcript, sign a power of attorney or speak to a revenue officer for you.
Pasting your Social Security number or bank statements into a public AI tool is a privacy risk too. We compare both paths in Can AI Get a Better Settlement Than a Tax Attorney? and our tax negotiation guide.

- Federal and state in one plan: We coordinate your IRS case with ALDOR so one agreement does not break the other.
- Licensed advocates: An enrolled agent, CPA or tax attorney oversees your case and can represent you before the IRS.
- In-house team: Your case stays with our people, not a call center.
What does tax relief cost?
Cost depends on how many years are involved, whether you owe the state too and which option fits. After we review your situation, you get a clear written quote before any work begins.
Results vary based on each taxpayer’s facts and finances. Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
Your story stays between you and your advocate. Every conversation and file is guarded by strict attorney-client and tax professional privilege standards and is never shared without your written permission.

Alabama IRS Tax Relief FAQs
Can you help me if you do not have an office in Alabama?
Yes. IRS representation is federal, and both the IRS and ALDOR handle most cases by mail, phone and fax. Once you sign a power of attorney, our licensed team represents you from our California offices.
I owe both the IRS and the Alabama Department of Revenue. Which comes first?
It depends on which agency is closer to taking action and what each balance costs you. Paying one in full while the other moves to garnish is a common mistake. We review both accounts and build plans that work together.
Does Alabama settle tax debt for less, like the IRS offer in compromise?
ALDOR states that it does not accept offers in compromise when taxes are legally due. State options usually focus on payment agreements and penalty relief, while an IRS offer may still be possible on the federal side.
How fast can you stop an IRS levy in Alabama?
If you are still inside the 30-day window after a final notice, a timely appeal can stop the levy while your case is reviewed. After a levy starts, a power of attorney and a realistic proposal can often lead the IRS to release it.
I have several years of unfiled returns. Where do I start?
Start with what the IRS and Alabama already have on file. We pull your records, identify which years are required and build a plan that handles the missing returns and the balance together.
Can unpaid taxes affect a security clearance in Huntsville?
Unfiled returns and unpaid federal taxes are financial issues that can come up in a background investigation. Being in a formal, current agreement generally looks better than an unresolved balance, so it pays to act early.
A hurricane hit my county. Do I still owe?
Usually, yes. The IRS often postpones filing and payment deadlines for declared disaster areas, but the tax is still due once the postponement ends. We can check whether a postponement applied and plan for the balance.
My business owes Alabama sales tax. Can you help?
Yes. We help Alabama business owners file missing state and local sales tax returns, request payment agreements and address penalties, while lining up any IRS payroll or income tax debt so both plans hold.
