Florida does not tax personal income, so many residents assume tax trouble is something that happens in other states. Then an IRS notice shows up with a balance, a stack of penalties, and a deadline that already feels too close.
Republic Tax Relief helps individuals and business owners across Florida resolve federal tax debt and Florida Department of Revenue balances. This page explains how IRS tax relief works for Floridians, what hurricane relief does and does not cover, and how our licensed team can take over the conversation with the IRS.

How We Help Florida Taxpayers Resolve Tax Issues
You do not need a tax office down the street to get strong representation. IRS cases are handled through notices, phone calls, transcripts, and written requests, and a licensed representative can do all of that from anywhere in the country.
- Licensed to represent you. Our enrolled agents, CPAs, and tax attorneys can speak to the IRS for you once you sign a power of attorney.
- The IRS calls us, not you. After authorization is on file, letters and calls about your account come to our team.
- State help too. With Florida’s own written authorization, we can work with the Florida Department of Revenue on business tax balances.
- Remote and simple. Most Florida clients work with us by phone, video, and secure document upload. Hablamos español.
Our team is based in Corona, CA and Laguna Hills, CA. See every state we serve on our locations page.
No State Income Tax, but Plenty of Federal Tax Debt
Florida’s lack of a personal income tax is a real advantage. It also means that when tax debt builds up, the IRS is almost always the agency on the other side.
| What You Might Owe | Who Collects It | Who Usually Owes |
|---|---|---|
| Federal individual income tax | IRS | Wage earners, retirees, gig workers, self-employed |
| Federal payroll tax | IRS | Employers and business owners |
| Florida sales and use tax | Florida Department of Revenue | Retailers, restaurants, contractors, online sellers |
| Florida reemployment tax | Florida Department of Revenue | Employers |
| Florida corporate income tax | Florida Department of Revenue | Many corporations doing business in Florida |
Many newer Floridians also carry old business from a former home state. If you moved from a state with an income tax, that state may still send bills or residency questions for years you lived there. We sort out which agency is owed what before choosing a plan.
IRS Tax Relief Options for Floridians
Federal relief programs follow the same rules in Miami as in Pensacola. What changes is how the IRS counts your income, expenses, and equity, and allowed living costs can vary a lot from one Florida county to the next.
| Relief Option | Who It Fits | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Installment agreement | You can afford monthly payments | Spreads the balance out and generally stops levies |
| Offer in compromise | You cannot pay in full before the collection deadline | Settles the balance for less if the IRS accepts |
| Currently Not Collectible | Your income only covers basic living costs | Pauses active collection while interest continues |
| Penalty abatement | Clean history or a serious event like a hurricane | Removes qualifying penalties and the interest tied to them |
| Innocent spouse relief | A spouse or former spouse caused the problem | Can remove your share of a joint tax bill |
The right relief option depends on your numbers, not on an ad. Many of these programs became easier to reach under the IRS Fresh Start initiative, and our guide to tax debt relief options compares them side by side.
Hurricane Milton and IRS Disaster Relief in Florida
Few states see IRS disaster relief as often as Florida. Hurricanes Ian, Idalia, Debby, Helene, and Milton all led the IRS to push back tax filing and payment deadlines for Florida counties.
Hurricane Milton was one of the broadest. Combined with relief already given for Debby and Helene, the IRS extended many filing and payment deadlines for affected taxpayers in every Florida county (IRS: Tax Relief for Victims of Milton).
What Hurricane Relief Typically Covers
- Individual and business tax returns due during the relief window, including the individual income tax return normally due in spring
- Estimated tax payments for quarters that fall inside the window
- Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns, with penalty relief for certain payroll and excise tax deposits made within a short grace period
- Other time-sensitive acts, such as some retirement contributions and claims
How You Qualify
The IRS looks at the IRS address on file for you, also called your address of record. If that address is in a covered county, relief is usually automatic (IRS: Tax Relief in Disaster Situations). If you live elsewhere but your records or tax preparer were in the disaster area, you may need to contact the IRS and ask.
What Disaster Relief Does Not Do
- It does not reduce or forgive tax debt you owed before the storm
- It does not stop interest on balances that were already past due
- It does not help once the postponed deadline has passed and you still have not filed
Relief windows from past storms have closed. If you missed a postponed deadline, or the IRS charged a penalty during a window that should have protected you, that is a penalty problem we can still work on. The IRS announced new Florida tax relief on October 14, 2026, following Hurricane Isaias. Eligible taxpayers in 27 Florida counties have until February 8, 2027, for certain federal filing and payment deadlines. The relief is limited to qualifying taxpayers and specific obligations; it does not apply automatically to every Florida resident. Internal Revenue Service

IRS Penalty Abatement and Penalty Relief for Florida Taxpayers
Penalties are often the fastest-growing part of a Florida tax bill. The failure-to-file penalty can reach 25 percent of the unpaid tax, and the failure-to-pay penalty can add up to another 25 percent over time, with interest charged on both.
The good news is that a tax penalty is not always final. The IRS offers several ways to remove penalties when the facts support it (IRS: Penalty Relief).
| Type of Penalty Relief | When It Usually Applies |
|---|---|
| First-time abatement | No penalties in the prior three years, all required returns filed, and the tax paid or on a plan |
| Reasonable cause | A hurricane, serious illness, death in the family, or other event kept you from meeting a deadline |
| Disaster postponement correction | The IRS charged a filing or late payment penalty for a deadline that fell inside a relief window |
| Statutory exception | The penalty came from incorrect written advice from the IRS |
The IRS does not always remove penalties on its own, even when a storm was the reason. If you got a penalty notice from the IRS that does not look right, our team can review your account transcripts and request tax penalty abatement and relief in writing. Learn more in our penalty abatement guide and penalty abatement FAQs.
Unfiled Returns, Back Taxes, and IRS Audits in Florida
A lot of Florida tax debt starts with income that had nothing withheld. Real estate commissions, tips, 1099 construction work, short-term rental income, and online sales all fall into this group.
- Filing comes before relief. The IRS generally wants every required tax return filed before it approves a payment plan or settlement. Our unfiled tax returns team brings you current.
- IRS-prepared returns cost more. If you do not file a federal tax return, the IRS may prepare one for you without deductions or credits like the child tax credit.
- Audits can add new debt. An audit letter from the IRS can lead to a bigger balance. We respond for you through IRS audit representation.
Not sure what a letter means? Our guide to common IRS notices explains each one, and our back tax help service can take it from there.
Florida Homestead Law and IRS Tax Liens
Florida is known for protecting homes and paychecks from creditors. Those protections are strong against most private debts, but federal tax law plays by its own rules.
- Homestead does not block a federal tax lien. Florida’s homestead exemption protects a primary home from most creditors, but tax liens filed by the IRS can still attach and show up when you sell or refinance.
- Seizing a home is rare, not impossible. The IRS generally needs approval from a federal court before taking a primary residence.
- Florida’s wage protections do not cover the IRS. The state’s head-of-family wage exemption shields pay from many private garnishments, but not from an IRS wage levy.
- Florida is not a community property state. Spouses are usually tied together by filing joint returns, which is why innocent spouse relief comes up often for divorced or separated Floridians.

Stopping an IRS Levy or Wage Garnishment in Florida
An IRS levy rarely comes out of nowhere. It usually follows a series of notices and a final notice of intent to levy, which opens a 30-day window to request a hearing.
To stop or release a levy, we typically:
- File a power of attorney so the IRS deals with us right away
- Check whether your hearing deadline is still open
- Show hardship if the levy leaves you unable to cover basic living costs
- Set up an installment agreement or other relief option that ends the levy

Business Tax Debt and Florida Department of Revenue Help
Florida’s economy runs on tourism, construction, real estate, health care, and small family businesses. Many of those owners juggle unpaid federal payroll tax with the IRS and unpaid sales tax with the state at the same time.
Federal Payroll Tax Problems
- Missed payroll tax deposits can lead to the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty, which makes owners and officers personally liable
- Late quarterly returns stack penalties fast, especially during a slow season
- Our payroll tax debt relief team works to protect both the business and you
Florida Department of Revenue Balances
- Unpaid sales tax is treated as money that belonged to the state from the start
- The state can file tax warrants and liens against business assets
- Reemployment tax and corporate income tax balances add more pressure
- We request payment arrangements and penalty compromises where the facts support them
We also support Florida industries such as construction, real estate, medical practices, e-commerce, and restaurants. Explore our full business tax debt relief services.

The Risks of Going It Alone or Using AI
Florida tax problems often mix hurricane deadlines, federal-only rules, and state protections that do not apply to the IRS. That combination trips up do-it-yourself plans and AI chatbots more than people expect.
Expert Insights From Our Resolution Team
- Storm relief can create false confidence. Many people read that the IRS gave relief to taxpayers in their county and stop thinking about the older balance. Collection on debt from earlier years can keep going.
- The IRS does not always fix its own penalties. We regularly find penalties charged on deadlines that fell inside a disaster window. Paying them without asking is money you may never get back.
- Calling the IRS without a plan can backfire. When you contact the IRS directly, anything you say about income or assets can shape what it asks for next, and a payment you cannot keep can lead to default.
- The wrong offer can lock in a bad result. An offer in compromise built on the wrong county expense figures can be rejected or set far too high. The IRS accepts offers based on its own formulas, not on what feels fair.
- AI tools repeat old news as current. Chatbots often present expired hurricane deadlines as active, or apply one storm’s county list to another. A wrong date can turn into a late filing penalty.
- Uploading tax records to a chatbot is a privacy risk. Many public AI tools can store what you type, including Social Security numbers and bank details.

Florida Tax Relief FAQs
Do you have an office in Florida?
No. Our offices are in Corona and Laguna Hills, California. We represent Florida clients by phone, video, and secure upload, and federal authorization lets our licensed team handle your IRS case from anywhere.
Florida has no income tax. Why do I owe taxes?
Florida does not tax personal income, but the IRS does. Most Floridians with tax debt owe federal income tax, and business owners may also owe Florida sales tax, reemployment tax, or corporate income tax.
Does Hurricane Milton relief still apply to me?
The postponed deadlines from Hurricane Milton have passed. If the IRS charged a penalty for a deadline that fell inside the relief window, or a storm kept you from filing, you may still qualify for penalty relief.
Does IRS disaster relief forgive tax debt?
No. Disaster relief postpones deadlines. It does not erase taxes owed before the storm, and interest on older balances keeps running.
Can I get IRS penalties removed?
Often, yes. First-time abatement and reasonable cause relief, including hurricane damage, can remove qualifying penalties. The IRS reviews each request, so clear documentation matters.
Does Florida’s homestead exemption protect my house from the IRS?
Not fully. A federal tax lien can still attach to a Florida homestead. The IRS generally needs a federal court’s approval to seize a primary home, so seizure is rare, but a lien can block a sale or refinance.
Can the IRS garnish my wages in Florida?
Yes. Florida’s head-of-family wage exemption does not apply to IRS levies. An installment agreement or proof of hardship can often get a wage levy released.
Can you help with the Florida Department of Revenue?
Yes. With your written authorization, we work with the Department on sales tax, reemployment tax, and corporate income tax balances, payment arrangements, and penalty requests.
Do you help Spanish-speaking clients?
Yes. Our team includes Spanish speakers who can explain your options and handle your case.
