A straight answer about where we are: Republic Tax Relief does not have a Nevada office. Our team works from Southern California offices in Corona and Laguna Hills, a short drive down I-15 from Las Vegas, and we represent Nevada clients by phone, video and secure upload. IRS representation is federal, so your address does not limit what we can do for you.

Why IRS Tax Debt Hits Nevada Taxpayers Differently

Nevada has no personal income tax, so most residents never file a state return. That sounds like good news, and mostly it is. It also means the IRS is the agency sending your notices, filing liens and issuing levies.

We see a pattern with Nevada clients. Without a state return to file, people lose the habit of thinking about taxes until April. Income with no withholding slips through, and the IRS notices before the taxpayer does.

Common ways Nevadans end up owing money to the IRS

  • Cash tips that never made it onto a tax return
  • 1099 income from rideshare, delivery, conventions or event work with nothing withheld
  • Missed estimated tax payments by self-employed workers and small-business owners
  • Casino jackpots reported on Form W-2G but left off the return
  • Retirement account withdrawals taken during a rough stretch
  • Payroll taxes withheld from employees but never sent to the IRS

Signs you need help now

  • You received a final notice of intent to levy or a wage garnishment warning
  • Your bank froze your account, or the IRS kept your tax refund
  • An IRS letter says you underreported tips, gig income or gambling winnings
  • You have several years of returns you have not filed
  • Your business is behind on payroll taxes or Nevada sales tax

Nevada State Tax Debt: Business Taxes, Not Income Taxes

No income tax does not mean no state tax problems. For business owners, the Nevada Department of Taxation collects sales and use tax, the Modified Business Tax (MBT) on payroll, and more. Larger companies may also owe Commerce Tax.

The Nevada Department of Taxation applies Commerce Tax to businesses whose Nevada gross revenue tops $4 million in a fiscal year. Here is a quick map of who collects what.

Tax Who Collects It Who It Usually Hits Common Problem
Federal income tax IRS Individuals and self-employed Unpaid balances, unfiled years, liens and levies
Federal payroll tax IRS Employers Personal liability for unpaid trust fund taxes
Sales and use tax Nevada Department of Taxation Retailers, restaurants, online sellers Tax collected from customers but not sent in
Modified Business Tax Nevada Department of Taxation Most employers Late quarterly returns and growing penalties
Commerce Tax Nevada Department of Taxation Businesses over $4 million in Nevada gross revenue Missed annual returns
Unemployment insurance contributions DETR Employment Security Division Employers Unpaid quarterly contributions
Property tax County treasurer, such as Clark or Washoe County Homeowners and property owners Delinquent bills and local tax liens

Sales tax is the one that worries us most. It is money you collected from customers on the state’s behalf, so Nevada treats it seriously. We coordinate your state and federal tax liabilities, so paying one does not sink the other. Learn more about our business tax resolution services.

Tax Relief for the People Who Keep Nevada Running

Nevada’s economy runs on hospitality, construction, real estate and a growing army of independent workers. Each group tends to land in its own kind of IRS trouble. Here is what we see most often.

Casino, hotel and restaurant workers who earn tips

Dealers, servers, bartenders, valets and cocktail staff earn a big share of their income in tips. Tips are taxable, and any federal deduction for tip income still depends on reporting it first. When tips go unreported, the IRS can estimate them for you, and its estimate is rarely friendly. Our guide to common IRS notices explains the letters that usually start this process.

Gig workers, entertainers and 1099 contractors

Rideshare drivers, convention staff, performers and freelancers get paid without withholding. Miss a few quarterly estimates and the tax balance, plus interest and penalties, can grow faster than you expect. See our back tax help services.

Gamblers and jackpot winners

Casinos send the IRS a Form W-2G for larger wins, so the IRS knows about the jackpot even if you forgot it. Losses can only offset winnings if you itemize and kept good records. A missing W-2G often turns into a surprise bill, and we can review whether the IRS figure is right.

Restaurant, bar and hospitality employers

Payroll is the biggest risk for Nevada’s service businesses. When cash gets tight, owners sometimes use withheld payroll taxes to cover rent or inventory. The IRS can then hold owners personally responsible. Read about payroll tax debt relief and our tax resolution guide for restaurants.

Contractors, real estate agents and investors

Southern Nevada has gone through big building booms and sharp slowdowns. Contractors in Henderson, North Las Vegas and Pahrump can go from busy to broke in a single season, leaving unpaid estimates behind. We offer dedicated construction tax resolution and tax resolution for real estate professionals.

Medical practices and online sellers

Practice owners face payroll and high-income audit risk, while online sellers juggle sales tax rules across many states. Explore help for medical professionals and e-commerce businesses.

Retirees and transplants from California

Many Nevadans moved here from California. Moving ends California income tax going forward, but it does not erase what you owed while you lived there. The Franchise Tax Board also looks closely at the year you moved. Because our offices are in California, we handle FTB issues often. Learn more on our California tax relief page.

Start With Your IRS Transcript, Not a Guess

Before we recommend anything, we pull your IRS account transcript and your wage and income transcript. A notice tells you what the IRS wants. A transcript tells us what actually happened on your account.

  • Every year with a balance, and how much is tax versus penalties
  • Which years are unfiled, and whether the IRS filed a substitute return for you
  • Every W-2, 1099 and W-2G the IRS has on record
  • Whether a lien is filed or a levy is pending
  • The assessment dates that start the IRS collection clock

You can see some of this through your online IRS account on the IRS website. But transcripts use codes that are easy to misread. Many failed offers and payment plans trace back to bad numbers at the very start.

Behind on Returns? You May Need to File Your Taxes Before Relief Is Possible

The IRS will not consider an offer or most payment plans until required returns are filed. When you fail to file your taxes, the IRS may file a substitute return for you. Those returns skip most deductions and often show a much higher balance.

We prepare your missing returns using your transcripts and records, and the real numbers often mean you owe less than the IRS claimed. One more thing people miss: a tax extension gives you more time to file. It does not give you more days to pay your taxes. Learn more about our unfiled tax returns services.

Got a Notice of Intent to Levy? How We Stop IRS Levies in Nevada

A levy is the IRS actually taking your money or property. Before most levies, the IRS must send a final notice of intent to levy and your right to a hearing. That letter starts a 30-day window, and it is the strongest protection you have.

Type of Levy What It Means for Nevadans
Wage levy Your employer sends a large share of each paycheck to the IRS until it is released
Bank levy Your bank freezes funds, then sends them to the IRS after a short holding period
Business receivables Customers or payment processors are told to pay the IRS instead of you
Federal tax lien Not a seizure, but a public claim on your home and property that can block a sale or refinance

What we do in the first days

  • File a power of attorney so the IRS talks to us, not you
  • Contact the IRS to request a collection hold while we work
  • File a Collection Due Process appeal if you are still inside the 30-day window
  • Propose a resolution that gives the IRS a reason to release the levy

IRS Debt Relief Options for Nevada Taxpayers

There is no single fix that fits everyone. The right path depends on your income, expenses, assets and filing history. Here is how the main federal options compare.

Option Best For What It Does Watch Out For
Installment agreement People who can pay over time Monthly payments that stop most collection Interest keeps running until paid
Offer in compromise People who truly cannot pay in full Settles for less based on assets and income Strict financial review, many are rejected
Currently not collectible Severe hardship Pauses active collection The debt remains and refunds are kept
Penalty abatement Clean history or a solid reason Removes qualifying penalties The underlying tax is still owed
Innocent spouse relief Spouses hit by a partner’s errors Separates you from tax you should not owe Deadlines and proof requirements

Can’t Pay Your Tax Debt in Full? Installment Agreement Options

A payment plan is the most common way to pay off your tax debt when you cannot pay your tax bill all at once. The key is a plan to pay that you can actually keep. Here are the main types we set up for Nevada clients.

  • Short-term plan: If your combined balance is under $100,000, the IRS generally gives you 180 days to pay. It works when you can pay the amount in full soon, like after a busy convention season, and paying fast is the best way to avoid interest and penalties stacking up.
  • Long-term installment agreement with the IRS: You make monthly payments over several years. Balances of $50,000 or less can usually qualify without a full financial statement.
  • Direct debit plans: You make payments automatically from your bank account. A direct debit plan lowers the risk of a missed payment and can reduce setup fees.
  • Partial pay agreements: When you cannot pay the full amount before the collection period ends, the IRS may accept payments that add up to less than the full balance.

Two warnings. Penalties and interest keep adding up while you pay, so you still have to pay more than the original bill. And you must pay on time and stay current on future tax, including quarterly estimates. Missed estimates are the top reason self-employed Nevadans default. Learn more in our IRS payment plans guide.

When you truly cannot pay: currently not collectible status

If you are unable to pay anything without falling behind on rent, food or utilities, the IRS may mark your account currently not collectible. Collection pauses, but the debt you owe stays. The IRS generally has 10 years from the date of assessment to collect, and that clock keeps running while you are in this status.

Who Can Qualify to Request an Offer in Compromise?

An offer in compromise lets you settle your tax debt for less than the total you owe to the IRS. The IRS will not accept just any number, though. According to the IRS offer in compromise page, it looks at your ability to pay, income, expenses and asset equity.

The IRS uses national and local expense standards when it reviews your budget. Housing and utility allowances are set by county, so a Clark County household is measured differently than one in Washoe or Nye County. Getting these numbers right is a big part of a strong offer.

You may be a good candidate if

  • Your income barely covers basic living costs
  • You have little equity in your home, car or accounts
  • Your debt could not be paid off before the collection period ends
  • All required returns are filed and current estimates are paid

An offer is usually a long shot if

  • You have strong income or meaningful home equity
  • You could pay through a payment plan in a few years
  • You have unfiled years or are in an open bankruptcy
  • You recently moved or gave away assets

When IRS offers fail, it is often because the math was wrong from the start. We run your numbers first and tell you honestly whether to pursue an offer in compromise or choose a better path. Read more in our offer in compromise guide.

Penalty Abatement and Relief if Your Spouse Caused the Tax Debt

Removing penalties that should not be there

Penalties can make up a large share of an old tax bill. Penalty abatement can remove them if you have a clean history or a good reason, such as a serious illness or a death in the family. When a penalty comes off, the interest charged on it comes off too, which can cut accrued penalties and interest a lot.

Why Nevada’s community property law matters

Nevada is one of the community property states listed in IRS Publication 555. That means income earned during a marriage is generally treated as belonging to both spouses, even if only one earned it. It can pull a spouse into IRS debt they knew nothing about.

If you signed a joint tax return, or your spouse hid income, you may be able to request relief. The IRS offers four types: innocent spouse relief, separation of liability, equitable relief and relief from community property laws. Learn how innocent spouse relief works.

Is There Really an IRS Tax Debt Forgiveness Program?

You have probably heard ads promising to erase your tax debt. There is no single IRS debt forgiveness program that wipes a balance clean. What exists is a set of tax relief programs, often called the Fresh Start initiative, that make payment plans, offers and lien relief easier to reach.

Real IRS tax debt forgiveness, through an accepted offer, is possible for people who qualify. Watch for these red flags from companies selling it:

  • A promise of “pennies on the dollar” before anyone reviews your finances
  • A guaranteed result, which no honest firm can give
  • Large fees with no transcript review or written plan
  • Pressure to sign today

Expert Insight: The Hidden Risks of Handling the IRS Alone or With AI

Calling the IRS yourself or asking a chatbot can feel faster and cheaper. But in tax resolution, the costliest mistakes are the ones nobody warns you about. Here is what our team sees go wrong.

A weak offer can cost you time

While an offer is under review, the IRS collection clock is paused. A rushed offer that gets rejected can add many months to how long the IRS can pursue you.

Missing 30 days can cost you a judge

Appeal after the final notice deadline and you may still get a hearing, but you lose the right to take a bad decision to Tax Court. Most people learn this too late.

Your tip numbers can become the IRS’s numbers

Guessing at old cash tips on a phone call or financial form can lock in a figure higher than what you really earned. Those statements are signed under penalty of perjury.

AI often assumes you have a state income tax

General chatbots regularly mix up state rules and may tell a Nevadan to fix a state return that does not exist. They also cannot see your transcript or a pending levy, and they cannot sign a power of attorney.

Pasting your Social Security number or bank statements into a public AI tool is a privacy risk too. We compare the two side by side in Can AI Get a Better Settlement Than a Tax Attorney?

Nevada IRS Debt Relief FAQs

Nevada has no state income tax. Does that mean my tax debt is only federal?

For most individuals, yes. Without a state income tax, the IRS is usually the only agency collecting on personal income. Business owners can still owe Nevada sales tax, Modified Business Tax, Commerce Tax or unemployment contributions, and former California residents may still owe the Franchise Tax Board.

Can you help me if you do not have an office in Nevada?

Yes. IRS representation is federal and is handled by phone, mail and secure online systems, not in person. Once you sign a power of attorney, our licensed team represents you from our California offices, which share Nevada’s Pacific time zone.

I got an IRS notice about unreported tips or W-2G gambling winnings. What should I do?

Do not ignore it, and do not simply agree to the amount. The IRS often estimates tips or misses gambling losses you can document. We pull your transcripts, check the figures against your records and respond before the deadline on the notice.

Nevada is a community property state. Can I be held responsible for my spouse’s IRS debt?

Possibly. Community property rules can treat a spouse’s income as shared, and signing a joint return makes both spouses liable. You may be able to request innocent spouse relief, separation of liability, equitable relief or relief from community property laws, depending on your facts.

How fast can you stop an IRS levy?

It depends on where you are in the process. If you are still inside the 30-day window after a final notice, a timely appeal can stop the levy while your case is reviewed. Even after a levy starts, a power of attorney and a realistic proposal can often lead the IRS to release it.

Is there an IRS tax debt forgiveness program for Nevada residents?

There is no special program just for Nevada and no plan that erases debt automatically. Nevada residents use the same federal options as everyone else, including an offer in compromise for those who qualify. We review your finances first and tell you honestly which option fits.

How long does the IRS have to collect my tax debt?

The IRS generally has 10 years from the date a tax is assessed to collect it. Some actions, like a pending offer in compromise or certain appeals, pause that clock. Your transcript shows the exact dates for each year.

I moved from California to Nevada. Can California still collect from me?

Yes. Moving to Nevada stops California income tax going forward, but it does not cancel balances from the years you lived there. The Franchise Tax Board can keep collecting after you move, so we look at both your IRS and California accounts.

My Nevada business owes sales tax or Modified Business Tax. Can you help?

Yes. We help Nevada business owners file missing state returns, request payment arrangements and address penalties with the Nevada Department of Taxation, while coordinating any IRS payroll or income tax debt so both plans work together.
